Founded in 2002, OPSWAT provides software engineers and IT professionals with development tools and data services to power manageability and security solutions. The company’s flagship product, OESIS Framework, is a software management solution licensed by major technology companies like Cisco Systems, Juniper Networks, Citrix, Microsoft, HP, and many others. The OESIS Framework provides the ability to detect, assess and remediate third party software applications. As the industry standard for enabling endpoint application manageability and compliance regulation, OESIS has already been deployed on an estimated hundred million endpoint systems worldwide. To learn more about OESIS, please visit the product page at opswat.com/products/oesis-framework. In addition to software management SDKs, OPSWAT is also a world leader in interoperability certifications and multiple-engine scanning solutions. See the products and services section for more details.
Worldwide Peer-to-Peer Application Market Share
Using data collected through AppRemover and Security Score, OPSWAT analyzed OESIS Framework detections to determine the worldwide market share of well-known peer-to-peer (P2P) applications. For this report, the definition of P2P applications is restricted to those which enable public file sharing. To learn more about this report’s data collection process, see the data collection section.
The worldwide P2P market is clearly dominated by µTorrent. With more than 50% of the market, its popularity is consistent with previous market share reports. The remaining products in the top ten are distributed somewhat evenly in the single digits, ranging between three and six percent. After µTorrent, Pando and Ares were detected the most, each at around five-and-a-half percent. BitTorrent, another product from the company that owns µTorrent, occupies the fourth position at 5.2%. Combining this figure with µTorrent’s market share brings the company up to about 59%. Products that did not make the top ten highest detections comprised only seven percent of the market.
|P2P Application||Market Share|
|E||Free Download Manager||5.0%|
For the first time, OPSWAT looked at the percentages of users who had one or more P2P products installed or actively running on their machines. About a third of users had a P2P product that was detected by OESIS, but only around 10% had a P2P product actively running.
Worldwide Instant Messenger Market Share
Using data collected through AppRemover and Security Score, OPSWAT analyzed OESIS Framework detections to determine the worldwide market share of well-known instant messaging (IM) applications. Users have several ways to chat without downloading an application, such as directly through a browser or email client. This report does not account for these types of services. To learn more about this report’s data collection process, see the data collection section.
In contrast to P2P results, which indicated one product dominating the market, IM results show two products jointly dominating. Skype, with 37.7%, was the IM most often detected, followed by Windows Live at 31.8%. Windows and Skype, both being Microsoft products, combine to a market share of almost 70%, surpassing that held by the sum of BitTorrent and µTorrent in the P2P market. Since Microsoft has announced plans to discontinue Live Messenger, it will be interesting to see whether Live users will move to Skype, or if they will switch to other IM clients in the future. Yahoo!, at 8.6%, was detected far more than the remaining four products that made the list, which are all nearly even, each at slightly below 4% of the market. Though there are many products that did not make the list, the top seven products comprised almost 93% of the market.
|IM Application||Market Share|
For the first time, OPSWAT looked at the percentage of users who had IM products installed or actively running on their machines. Installed IM applications were found on about 45% of users’ machines, while around 28% of all users were found to have an IM application actively running. Both of these figures are much higher than what was found in the P2P section of this report. These figures do not include browser-based chat services..
Worldwide Backup Sync Client Market Share
Using data collected through AppRemover and Security Score, OPSWAT analyzed OESIS Framework detections to determine the worldwide market share of well-known backup sync applications. Backup sync applications synchronize files in two separate locations. Each time a user saves a file, the parallel file updates in real time as a way to back up the original. This report excludes non-sync backup products such as Norton 360 and Kaspersky PURE. To learn more about this report’s data collection process, see the data collection section.
In the data collected by OPSWAT for backup sync clients, Dropbox was the dominant product detected, at 47.9%. Google Drive and Apple iCloud followed at 16.5% and 10.5, respectively, followed by SkyDrive at 9.3%. Several products were detected at below two percent, with a cumulative total of 15.8% of the results. Backup products without a sync function are not included in the results.
|Backup Product||Market Share|
This report shows data for P2P, IM, and backup applications on Windows systems. The report was created by combining data that was collected using OPSWAT’s AppRemover and Security Score tools, which utilize the detection capabilities of the OESIS Framework to collect information regarding the applications installed on endpoint computers. AppRemover is free for download on appremover.com, and Security Score is available at opswat.com/products/security-score. Both applications are also available at various download sites across the web. These tools are used around the world by home and business users, both expert and inexperienced in security software. For the purpose of the report, the sample of more than 45,000 users is assumed to be representative of the market, based on the wide accessibility of the tool to a large range of users.
Several attributes inherent in way the data is collected may cause the results in this report to differ from what exists in the real world. OPSWAT makes no claims as to the accuracy of the data in the real world market and is continuously working on ways to overcome the following obstacles:
- AppRemover is an uninstallation application. Products that are uninstalled from an AppRemover user’s computer, as well as other applications that are present, are included in this report without distinction.
- Although these tools are also used in a business setting, the majority of AppRemover and Security Score users are on home computers. This report does not differentiate between home and business users.
- These applications are marketed in OPSWAT’s own channels. Users sampled may not be representative of the general population. For example, the average P2P user in the real world may not equate to the average AppRemover or Security Score user.
- The free versions of these applications are only available for Windows users. Mac applications are not included in this report, and products that are available on both Mac and Windows would presumably have different market shares in the real world.
- While AppRemover and Security Score are popular tools worldwide, their use is not commensurate with worldwide population distribution. Only English-language versions of these tools are available, so countries that have higher numbers of English speakers are expected to use these applications at higher rates, as well as countries that have been exposed to more coverage of these tools by press and partners.
Below is a sample of worldwide distribution of combined data collected by AppRemover and Security Score:
Stay tuned for the next market share report, which will feature improved methodologies and more in-depth comparisons of product usage. OPSWAT is working to increase global usage of AppRemover, Security Score, and other free applications. Additional OPSWAT products will also collect user data in future reports, and Mac application data will also be added in the future. New, more reliable methods of data collection are currently in development, and improved algorithms will be unveiled over the next few reports that will cover several application types, including antivirus products.
Vendors of P2P, IM, backup, and other applications interested in inclusion in these reports and the OESIS Framework are encouraged to contact firstname.lastname@example.org to learn how to partner with OPSWAT.
